In August 2012, Jim Windass (63) cycled 2,451 miles from Los Angeles to Chicago, along America's historic Route 66, to raise funds for Dove House Hospice. Jim took on this huge personal challenge to try and raise £10,000 in memory of his late wife Christine, lost to cancer in July 2010.
In total, Jim and his supporters helped raise a total of £10,697.23, exceeding the target and helping to fund the ongoing operation of Dove House Hospice. Thank you to everyone that donated to Cycle 66.
This website will remain as a legacy to the Cycle 66 event, with information on how the ride unfolded, the challenge involved, the Cycle 66 team, Route 66 and the charity. Donations to Cycle 66 are now closed, but you can still donate to Dove House Hospice by clicking the links on this site.
CHALLENGE COMPLETED - THANK YOU TO ALL SPONSORS
Introduction to Cycle 66
The start line for Cycle 66 was Loving Heart Hospice in Los Angeles, a partner hospice for the project. Following a 2,451 mile route that forms the 'Main Street of America', Route 66 winds through Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, Arizona and New Mexico connecting California to Illinois. Jim finished his gruelling ride across America at Cycle 66's other partner hospice, Rainbow Hospice in Chicago.
Dove House Hospice offers palliative care for people over the age of 18 with life-limiting illnesses. They are the only hospice in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire and are crucial to many families in the local area. Dove House cared for Jim's wife Christine in a difficult time for Jim and his family, providing an invaluable service. Check out the Charity page to find out more about Dove House, their great work for the local community and why they need funds from projects like Cycle 66 to keep going.
The start time for the Cycle 66 Challenge was 5th August 2012, with the flights home from Chicago booked for 27th August 2012, which gave him about 3 weeks to complete the route. You can read more about Jim and his support team on the Team Profiles page, with links to articles and interviews on the Cycle 66 Story page.
Jim's big ride was supported by a variety of events, such as a music night and summer fair stall. Click on our Events page to read about the previous fundraisers, with photos and videos available via the Cycle 66 Facebook page.
Jim was helped by Sponsorship from individuals and businesses to exceed the £10,000 fundraising target (≈$15,000). By joining forces and pedalling in tandem, Cycle 66 helped raise the funds required to maintain the lifeline that Dove House Hospice provides.
